Lab-grown diamonds have become a pretty familiar term over the last few years. Once something we found ourselves explaining regularly in store, most people now have at least heard of them, particularly when shopping for an engagement ring.

But for anyone who isn’t quite sure what “lab-grown” actually means, here’s the simple version.

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, with the same crystal structure and essentially the same chemical and physical properties as diamonds formed naturally within the Earth. The main difference is their origin. Rather than forming underground over millions of years, lab-grown diamonds are created in a controlled laboratory environment using technology that recreates the conditions needed for a diamond to grow.

But there’s another side to lab-grown diamonds that you might not know about...

When you picture a diamond, chances are you think of the traditional clear, sparkling stone. But just like natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds can come in colour too.

Think beautiful blush pinks, striking blues, vibrant yellows and plenty of shades in between.

Colour in diamonds comes from changes or trace elements within their crystal structure. In a laboratory, scientists can influence these conditions during the growing process, or use specialist treatments afterwards, to create different colours.

For example, boron can contribute to blue colouring, while changes within the diamond’s crystal structure can create pink tones. The science behind it is fascinating, but the result is simple: a real diamond with all the sparkle you’d expect, just with a little more personality.
