There are quite a few things to consider, and unless you spend your days looking at diamonds, it can be difficult to know exactly what you’re looking for.

That’s where the 4 Cs of diamonds come in.

The 4 Cs are Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat, and together they help determine a diamond’s appearance, quality and value. Understanding the basics can make choosing the right diamond a whole lot easier.

Cut is arguably one of the most important of the 4 Cs because it has a huge impact on how a diamond looks when you wear it.

It’s all about how well the diamond has been cut and how effectively it reflects light. A well cut diamond will have plenty of sparkle and brilliance, while a poorly cut diamond can appear dull, even if it has a high colour or clarity grade.

It’s also worth remembering that cut and shape are not the same thing.

Round, oval, pear, emerald and princess are examples of diamond shapes. Cut refers to the proportions, symmetry and finish of the diamond itself.

So, if sparkle is high on your list, paying attention to cut is definitely worthwhile.

When it comes to traditional white diamonds, colour refers to how much of a yellow or brown tint can be seen within the stone.

Diamonds are graded on a scale from D to Z, with D being considered colourless and the scale gradually becoming warmer as you move towards Z.

But does that mean you always need a D colour diamond? Not necessarily.

The setting and metal you choose can make a difference to how the colour appears, and some people actually prefer a slightly warmer looking diamond. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference and what works with the overall design of your ring.|

Clarity refers to the natural characteristics found within a diamond.

These can be tiny internal inclusions or surface characteristics, which formed naturally as the diamond was created deep within the earth.

Diamonds are graded on their clarity, with higher grades having fewer visible inclusions.

But here's the thing: a diamond doesn't necessarily need to have the highest clarity grade to look beautiful. 

Many inclusions are so small that they can't be seen with the naked eye. This means you can sometimes choose a diamond with a lower clarity grade while still having a stone that looks completely clean to the eye.

Carat is probably the measurement you've heard most often when talking about diamonds.

It refers to the weight of the diamond, rather than its physical size.

A larger carat weight doesn't automatically mean a more beautiful diamond, and two diamonds with the same carat weight can look quite different depending on their shape and proportions.

This is why we always recommend looking at the diamond as a whole rather than focusing on one number.

There isn't really one correct answer. The right balance depends on what matters most to you, your budget and, ultimately, what you think your other half will love.

For some people, maximum sparkle is the priority. For others, having a larger stone matters more. Some prefer a completely colourless diamond, while others love a warmer, more characterful appearance.
